Hunting Tips & Tricks

5 Tips for Deer Huntinghunting deer

  1. One-Shot Kills: Knowing where to shoot for one-shot kills will save you a lot of time tracking blood trails this hunting season. These shots are going to depend on distance, bullet type, and meat retention, but The Survivalist Blog explains that these are the top 4 (in no particular order) locations to shoot a deer for a one-shot kill: High Shoulder, Heart-Lung (boiler room) Brain, and Neck. Practicing shots from various distances can help ensure you hit the deer just right as often as possible. These archery targets and firearm targets are great to have on hand.
  2. Know the Deer’s Routine: Deer follow a pattern unless their routes are destroyed or completely changed in some way, so once you know that route, you will see a lot more deer. Finding these routes can be easy if you know some basic tracking skills, or by using some modern advances, you can set up trail cams to watch your land for you. The two trail cams we suggest are the Wildgame Innovations Silent Crush 2, and the Terra 10/VU60 Cam/Viewer Combo. If you join in our #TrailCamTuesday giveaway, you could get one of these absolutely free!
  3. Change Up YOUR Routine: Sure you have an awesome treestand and you know there are deer in the area, but a professional outdoor sportsman, William “Spook” Spann, says in his blog, SpookSpann.com, that hunters have more success if they hunt in every location on the site. And, change up the time of day too! Deer are smarter than we give them credit for, and if hunters are constantly hunting early morning, it won’t take the deer long to figure that out. Try hunting during the 10am-1pm range. Mature bucks use this time to stretch their legs and find food before bedding.
  4. What You Wear Matters: Wearing the newest, most advanced camouflage gear is not necessary to be a great hunter. Humans have been hunting for centuries without it, and they did it by understanding a deer’s senses. Deer see the blue color spectrum better than red, which is why deer can’t see your orange vest. This is also the reason why you shouldn’t be wearing blue jeans on a hunt. Also, The Big Game Hunting Blog states you should be sure you’re NOT washing your hunting clothes with UV brightening detergent. Deer can see light in the ultra-violet spectrum pretty well, so you’re basically making yourself a human flashlight. You can find the perfect hunting gear HERE.
  5. Stay Safe!: Hunters are harmed and killed every year due to careless hunting procedures. Find local gun safety courses in your area to learn how to be a safe hunter. Some hunting accidents do not even involve a firearm. In fact, TMA states that 1 in 20 hunting accidents was caused by poor treestand safety. Be sure you’re wearing your safety harness in a treestand, and always check your gear before getting into the stand. Visit the Treestand Manufacturer’s Association’s website for safety guidelines, announcements, videos, and more on tree stand safety. Check out our post on Treestand Safety Tips to make sure you and your family are safe while on the hunt.

Tips from Fin and Field

  1. Scout: Find out where the turkeys are roosting in your area at night. Using a turkey call, call out and listen for the birds, but try not to disturb the area too much. When you come back, you want to make sure these birds haven’t “flown the coop”.
  2. Prep: Make sure all of your gear is ready to go by preparing a gear list. Test all of your equipment to make sure that everything works and is safe to use. Also, don’t forget food and water, because even though food might not be necessary on really short hunts, having water is crucial.
  3. Study the Habitat: Now that you know the general area the turkeys are hiding, you should study the rest of the hunting area. By using Google Maps you can find the perfect spots to set up your blind, estimate what routes the turkeys will take, and locate food and water sources. Knowing the area is key to being a successful hunter.
  4. Practice: You know what they say, “practice makes perfect”. Well, they aren’t wrong. You should be sharpening your skills as much as possible, but that doesn’t mean practicing the same skill over and over. Broaden your skills by practicing different types of calls, like a diaphragm, box or pot calls. When it comes to practicing your shot, don’t just practice standing straight up, aiming directly at a target. That’s just not realistic. Take shots at a turkey target crouching, sitting, and more real-world shotting positions. Make sure when the turkey of a lifetime shows up, you always have the perfect shot.
  5. Aiming Point: If you miss your shot on a turkey, you better just kiss that bird goodbye. The two best points for a one-shot kill on a turkey would be on the head, neck, or if you’re using a bow, the heart. The first hit is vital!
